Abstract: Conducting the all-zero block (AZB) detection before the transform and quantization may save the time needed for DCT transform operations, which are intensively time-consuming, and can not affect the encoding quality. The technique of AZB detection is widely used in real-time encoding occasion. This paper is focused on analysis of the principle about AZB detection algorithm for H.264/AVC. The general model of AZB detection is presented. A few AZB detection algorithms for H.264/AVC are compared in detection rate and time performance, which provide the basis for investigators implementing or selecting their appropriate AZB detection algorithm in real applications.
